A ship once lost beneath the sea now stands as one of Stockholm’s most breathtaking sights.
If you ever find yourself in Stockholm, Sweden, and have time to visit only one museum, make it the Vasa Museum. I received the recommendation from my dad and brother, who had the opportunity to visit the previous year, and I must say, I am incredibly grateful I took their advice. The history surrounding this magnificent ship is captivating, and the experience of stepping into the museum for the first time is beyond anything you can find online.
The Vasa Museum showcases a remarkable ship that tragically sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. It lay at the bottom of the sea for nearly 300 years before being miraculously raised, almost completely intact. The sight of the ship is breathtaking and offers a unique glimpse into maritime history.

My best tips for visiting this Museum would be to allot yourself more time than you think you will need to explore, as there are many fascinating exhibits that can easily capture your attention and prolong your stay. Going earlier in the day is also advisable to avoid big crowds, which can detract from the overall experience and make it harder to fully appreciate the artwork and artifacts on display. Additionally, do not skip the short film at the beginning that gives you some interesting facts about the boat; this engaging presentation sets the tone for your visit and enriches your understanding of the exhibits, ensuring you have a more fulfilling experience as you delve deeper into the museum’s offerings.
Top Things to See Inside
- 🛳 The Ship Viewpoints: Explore all six levels, where each floor reveals a stunning new perspective of the ship. Be sure to visit the upper balconies for an unforgettable experience!
- 🎬 The Short Intro Film: I previously mentioned the short film, and it plays every 20 minutes and is worth sitting down for, especially if you’re not familiar with the Vasa’s story.
- 🧍 The Life-size Models: The reconstructed faces of the crew are haunting and beautiful. They add a human layer to the history.
- 🏺 Artifacts + Weapons: From ropes and clothing to full-size cannons — it’s amazing how much survived underwater. Try your best to take your time so you dont miss any little detail.

My Visit to the Vasa
I was utterly unprepared for the breathtaking sight of the Vasa ship; no online image can even begin to convey the remarkable experience that awaits you. To reach the Vasa Museum, I hopped on one of the city scooters, riding through the vibrant streets from the city center to the museum in a leisurely 10-15 minutes. Upon my arrival, I stood in line for about 30-45 minutes, having wisely purchased my ticket online in advance to avoid wasting any more time than I had to. As soon as I stepped inside the building, I was completely captivated. The first thing I did was stand in awe next to the ship, gazing at it from bow to stern. It was hard to understand that this majestic vessel, nearly 400 years old, was preserved so beautifully, composed of 98% of its original wood material. The intricate details of its carvings and the sheer scale of its structure left me speechless, making the history it represents all the more interesting. Every glance revealed more of its story, connecting the past with the present in a mesmerizing way.

Walking around the Vasa Museum is a delightful experience, as it invites you to explore its spacious rooms and captivating exhibits at your own pace. Each room unfolds its unique narrative, bringing to life the rich history surrounding the ill-fated ship. Among the highlights are the actual skeletons of individuals who tragically lost their lives during the vessel’s maiden voyage, offering an intersting glimpse into the past. The museum showcases advanced technology that reconstructs the appearances of those who once sailed the ship, providing a haunting yet fascinating insight into their lives. Additionally, visitors can marvel at the intricately designed cannons that adorned the ship, as well as various lifeboats that tell the tale of survival within disaster. Each exhibit not only enhances your understanding of the Vasa’s storied past but also brings a deep connection to the people who once journeyed on this magnificent vessel.

Final Thoughts + Insider Tips
I truly cannot stress enough how amazing this museum visit was. Adding this stop into my short trip in Stockholm was relatively simple and absolutely worth it. Whether you’re a history buff, a curious traveler, or just someone looking for something uniquely Swedish, the Vasa Museum is an unforgettable experience. Even if you’re not usually a big museum person, this one feels different. The Vasa is so massive and beautifully preserved, it feels like stepping into a real-life time capsule.
I honestly left the museum with goosebumps. Seeing something so ancient, so detailed, and so full of history in front of you… it’s surreal. And I kept thinking how grateful I was that my dad and brother told me not to skip it — because they were so right.
A few final tips from me:
- 🕰 Go early — It gets busy, especially in summer, and it’s much nicer to wander around without huge crowds.
- 🎟 Buy tickets ahead online — It’ll save you standing in line, especially if you’re short on time.
- 🎧 Use the audio guide if you can — It adds a lot more depth and context to the exhibits (and it’s in several languages).
- ☕️ Grab a coffee nearby after — The little cafés on Djurgården Island are so charming and perfect for a break.
- 📸 Take your time — Walk around the ship on every floor. Each level gives you a totally new perspective, and you don’t want to miss the hidden details.
